Health Literacy On Long Island
On October 24, 2008, Literacy Suffolk and Literacy Nassau co-hosted a Legislative Breakfast at Molloy College Suffolk Center focusing on the social, economic and political effects that literacy has on seeking, understanding, and adhering to health related issues. Representatives and legislators from across Long Island were joined by administrators of health agencies and hospitals, universities, colleges, and community based organizations. Panelists related specific examples of communication barriers between health providers and patients, and strategies for assuring understanding of and compliance with medical advice.
